Renfrewshire issues its first £100 Fixed Penalty Notice

A Paisley resident has been the first person in Renfrewshire to receive a £100 Fixed Penalty Notice issued to him for making too much noise. Having ignored a Warning Notice issued under the Antisocial Behaviour (Scotland) Act, 2004 to turn the music down, the perpetrator now faces being £100 out of pocket. If the perpetrator does not pay up within 28 days of receiving the penalty notice, he could face being reported to the Procurator Fiscal and a fine of up to £1000. Over 20 Warning Notices have been issued in the last 3 months and until this latest case everyone had complied with these.

The action follows Renfrewshire Council's new powers  to deal with excessive domestic noise from parties, music, televisions, dogs etc. For further information contact Renfrewshire Council’s Environmental Services Department on 0141  840 3162/3463 between the hours of 08:40 and 16:45. For advice on other issues concerning antisocial behaviour the Council helpline can be contacted on 0800 169 1283.

Councillor Anne Hall, Renfrewshire Council’s spokesperson on Community Safety said: “This fine should serve as a warning to others. We now have greater powers than ever to deal with antisocial behaviour in Renfrewshire. Noise nuisance is a form of anti social behaviour and we are working with our partners to ensure that the people of Renfrewshire do not have to put up with this menace. We now have the measures to deal with perpetrators and we will ensure that these are enforced when necessary.”
