Linwood no more? - 2006/08/17 20:22 Linwood no more?During the highs and lows of the infamous car plant under various names including Rootes,Chrysler and Talbot this area was without a doubt known as Linwood. Now that the Phoenix has risen from the ashes of the car plant this area seems to have been claimed as part of Paisley. The Phoenix leisure park is a great local asset.
It seems to be creating great interest from various fast food companies and car dealers.
The concern for locals in Linwood is that it is very difficult to get here safely if you are not in a car.
Within a mile of Linwood "town centre" it should be a venue worth walking to.
There are NO pedestrian crossings and its impossible to get to the Phoenix without crossing the main carriageway TWICE on the way there and TWICE again on the way back.
There are the underpasses of course, relics of the old car plant, but they have limited advantage other than crossing between bus stops.

Why did developers not allow for Linwood pedestrian access?

Many locals will perhaps be oblivious to the fact that the local showcase cinema,Asda,McDonalds,Burger King etc and all the car dealers are on land that was once the home of the Linwood car plant.
Most famous of course for manufacturing the Hillman Imp.

Linwood was a very well known town during the years of the car plant, even when it was in process of finally closing down.
The dissapointing thing however is that it now appears Linwood has been abandonded slowly but surely over the years since that closure.
Back in the eighties when the Proclaimers sang "Linwood no more" in a list of other struggling Scottish towns from the song "Letter from America" I am sure many people thought the lyrics rather harsh.
There was and still is more to Linwood than the car plant, isn't there??
Also worth noting is there was TV documentary filmed about the car plant in the latter days and was called 'Linwood no more". maybe someone can track that down?
You can read more about the history of the car plant & see photos on this cool site.

Some 80's nostalgia?
Well here are the lyrics from the Proclaimer's song.

The Proclaimers - Letter from America
When you go will you send back
A letter from America?
Take a look up the railtrack
From Miami to Canada
Broke off from my work the other day
I spent the evening thinking about
All the blood that flowed away
Across the ocean to the second chance
I wonder how it got on when it reached the promised land?
When you go will you send back
A letter from America?
Take a look up the railtrack
From Miami to Canada
I've looked at the ocean
Tried hard to imagine
The way you felt the day you sailed
From Wester Ross to Nova Scotia
We should have held you
We should have told you
But you know our sense of timing
We always wait too long
When you go will you send back
A letter from America?
Take a look up the railtrack
From Miami to Canada
Lochaber no more
Sutherland no more
Lewis no more
Skye no more
(3x)
I wonder my blood
Will you ever return
To help us kick the life back
To a dying mutual friend
Do we not love her?
Do we not say we love her?
Do we have to roam the world
To prove how much it hurts?
When you go will you send back
A letter from America?
Take a look up the railtrack
From Miami to Canada
Bathgate no more
Linwood no more
Methil no more
Irvine no more.
(3x)
Bathgate no more
Linwood no more
Methil no more
Lochaber no more

Re:Linwood no more? - 2008/08/08 12:40 Whilst reading your topic about Linwood/Phoenix something came too light, Menzies that is based in the Phoenix is called Menzizes Linwood and further down in it's address it says Phoenix Retail Park Paisley so i hope this little extra piece of info helps out in naming the area or it may just add too the confusion lol

Re:Linwood no more? - 2008/10/14 15:25 Interesting you should mention the difficulties of getting to the Phoenix without motor transport. My wife's disabled and we seriously considered getting her one of those little electric scooters so she could get around Linwood while I'm at work. "Where would I go?", she asked. Good point honey. Why would anyone want to go to the town centre, and how would anyone get to the Phoenix? It's nothing short of disgraceful. My own view is that Linwood is forgotten about in the corridors of power. Out of sight, out of mind.
